Modin
Modin is a drop-in replacement for pandas that accelerates DataFrame operations by distributing them across cores or clusters. For large simulation post-processing (millions of points / time steps), pandas is limited to one core by the GIL; Modin automatically parallelizes via Ray or Dask, suited to batch analysis of simulation data.
Core features
- Zero-code migration: most pandas code works by replacing
import modin.pandas as pd - Multiple backends: Ray (default), Dask, Intel Gaaz (single-node multicore)
- Auto-partition: splits DataFrames by data size and cluster resources
- API coverage: 90%+ of pandas API (groupby, merge, rolling, etc.)
Use cases: Batch post-processing of large simulation results (CSV/HDF5/Parquet); statistical analysis and visualization prep; summarizing hundreds of parametric runs; replacing pandas for GB-scale data.
