Sketchfab
Provider:Sketchfab (Epic Games)
Sketchfab: 8M+ published models, 700,000+ CC-downloadable, with PBR materials and glTF/GLB, but no mass, collision or joints — an L0 geometry and visual asset source.
At a glance
- Readiness
- L0 · Geometry ready
- Rationale
- 8M+ published models and 700,000+ downloadable Creative Commons models with PBR materials and geometry, but no mass, inertia, collision shapes or joint definitions, so it cannot enter physical simulation directly — hence L0.
- Scale
- 8M+ published models and 25M+ registered accounts; 700,000+ models are downloadable (CC BY / BY-NC / BY-SA / BY-ND / CC0, plus a Standard license); downloads ship mainly as glTF / GLB / USDZ. (Figures from Sketchfab's official developer docs (the Download API page says "over 1 million free models" while the download ecosystem page says "more than 700,000") and a third-party platform review (8M+ models / 25M+ accounts); the two official figures conflict, so the conservative "700,000+ downloadable" is used. Checked 2026-10-25.)
- License
- Mixed (check per asset) — Self-check each model: licenses are chosen per model by uploaders, typically CC BY, CC BY-NC, CC BY-SA, CC BY-ND or CC0 (public-domain cultural heritage), plus a Standard license that needs no attribution. Except CC0 and Standard, all CC variants require attribution; BY-NC forbids commercial use, BY-ND forbids modification, BY-SA requires share-alike on derivatives. After Epic launched Fab in October 2024 the Sketchfab Store closed and paid model trading moved to Fab. Downloads require a logged-in Sketchfab account (OAuth).

Why it is listed
Sketchfab is the largest public 3D publishing community, and a practical starting point when a digital-twin scene or robot demo needs recognisable geometry quickly. It is listed as an L0 source: geometry and materials, nothing physical.
Readiness assessment
Models carry PBR materials, textures and animation, and downloads ship as glTF, GLB or USDZ. What they do not carry is mass, inertia, collision proxies, friction or joint definitions. Converting a Sketchfab asset into a simulation-ready body means adding every physical property yourself, which is why this entry sits at L0 rather than L1.
Practical notes
Filter search by license before you download anything, because the platform mixes CC0, CC BY, BY-NC, BY-SA, BY-ND and Standard models in the same results page. BY-NC assets will invalidate a commercial deployment, and BY-ND assets cannot be decimated or re-meshed. Attribution is mandatory for every CC variant except CC0.
Since October 2024 the Sketchfab Store has been closed and commercial model trading moved to Epic's Fab marketplace, so treat Sketchfab as the free and portfolio side of that ecosystem. Downloads require a logged-in account via the Download API or the web UI.
