MFEM Examples and Miniapps
Provider:Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
MFEM ships 41 numbered examples and a dozen physics miniapps (electrostatics, magnetostatics, EM, Joule heating, Navier-Stokes) under BSD-3, a standard on-ramp for PDE solvers.

- Rationale
- Engineering L3: 41 numbered examples (most with serial and parallel variants) plus a dozen physics miniapps (Volta electrostatics, Tesla magnetostatics, Maxwell transient EM, Joule heating, Navier incompressible Navier-Stokes), each set up against an analytic or known solution.
- Scale
- 41 numbered examples (some with serial and parallel variants) plus a dozen physics miniapps and external proxy apps such as Laghos and Mulard (The official MFEM tutorial page (mfem.org/tutorial/further) lists Example 0 through 41 and names miniapps including Volta, Tesla, Maxwell, Joule and Navier. Checked 2026-10-25.)
- License
- BSD — MFEM is released under BSD-3-Clause (LLNL-CODE-806117); examples and miniapps carry the same license and are free for commercial and derivative use.

Why it is listed
MFEM's example and miniapp collection is the most systematic open on-ramp to high-order finite element programming: it walks from a Poisson solve through Maxwell eigenproblems to incompressible Navier-Stokes, in a library used by BLAST, Cardioid, Palace and the CEED exascale projects.
Readiness assessment
Each of the 41 numbered examples is a self-contained, commented program with a documented discretization and a runnable verification setup, and most have a parallel twin that shows how little changes when moving to MPI — an L3 reference once you build the library.
Practical notes
The library is C++ with optional CUDA, HIP, RAJA or OpenMP backends and Meshes in its own format; BSD-3-Clause means commercial reuse is permitted with attribution.
