Gmsh Tutorials and Mesh Cases
Provider:C. Geuzaine / J.-F. Remacle (University of Liège)
Gmsh provides 21 t-series tutorials and 7 x-series API tutorials covering geometry construction through STEP import and partitioning, released under the GPL.

- Readiness
- L2 · Semantic & material ready
- Rationale
- Engineering L2: t1–t21 cover geometry construction, extrusion, mesh size fields, STL remeshing, the OpenCASCADE kernel, STEP import and partitioning, with x1–x7 as API-only extensions; the output is geometry and mesh rather than a physics field solution, hence L2 as a pre-processing asset.
- Scale
- 21 t-series tutorials plus 7 x-series API extension tutorials, with many extra examples and benchmarks in the distribution (The Gmsh 4.15.2 reference manual table of contents lists t1–t21 and x1–x7; each tutorial ships a .geo script plus C++, C, Python, Julia and Fortran versions. Checked 2026-10-25.)
- License
- GPL — GPL v2 or later with an exception permitting linking against third-party libraries such as Netgen, METIS, OpenCASCADE and ParaView; cannot be embedded into closed-source distributed software, which needs a separate commercial license.

Why it is listed
Nearly every open CAE workflow begins with generating a defensible mesh, and Gmsh's tutorial set is the clearest published path through that step: from elementary entities and physical groups to non-conforming STL remeshing and STEP partitioning.
Readiness assessment
The t-series runs t1 to t21 and covers geometry construction, extrusion, mesh size fields, background meshes, transfinite and quad meshing, OpenCASCADE boolean modelling, STEP import and mesh partitioning; the x-series adds seven API-only tutorials on geometry and mesh data access — an L2 pre-processing asset rather than a physics solution.
Practical notes
Each tutorial ships as a .geo script with parallel C++, C, Python, Julia and Fortran versions through the API. Licensing is GPL v2 or later with a linking exception; embedding Gmsh in closed-source distributed software requires a commercial license.
