CalculiX Test & Example Cases
Provider:Guido Dhondt / Klaus Wittig (MTU Aero Engines)
CalculiX is an open-source 3D structural FEM program; its distribution ships test cases and a GitHub community repo adds nonlinear/section/RVE examples, free to build and run.

- Rationale
- Engineering L2: the distribution ships test examples (structural + large fluid) and a GitHub community example repo (nonlinear/sections/RVE); you must build the solver and run them yourself, hence L2.
- Scale
- Test examples shipped in the distribution (structural + large fluid); GitHub calculix/CalculiX-Examples community repo (nonlinear/sections/RVE) (CalculiX 2.23 (released 2025-11) ships test cases; the community example repo is maintained on GitHub (latest tested on CCX/CGX 2.19). Checked 2026-10-25.)
- License
- GPL — CalculiX solver and pre/post-processor are released under GPL; its input format is based on Abaqus with permission from HKS, and results are independent of Abaqus.

Why it is listed
CalculiX is a free, GPL-licensed 3D structural finite element program that reproduces the Abaqus input format, making it the most accessible open solver for reproducing classical verification cases without a commercial license.
Readiness assessment
The distribution ships its own test examples (structural plus large fluid runs) and the GitHub community repo adds worked nonlinear, cross-section and RVE cases with reference solutions — a solid L2 starting library once you build the solver.
Practical notes
You compile the solver yourself (needs SPOOLES/ARPACK); the input files are plain .inp, so they also double as Abaqus-compatible practice cases.
