TubeLab: Interactive Inverse Design of Wind Instrument Bores with Hard Spectral Constraints
My rating
TubeLab is a browser-based acoustic simulator designed specifically for the inverse design of cylindrical wind instrument bores without tone holes. The direct problem is solved using the Transfer Matrix Method, which models acoustic wave propagation through cylindrical tubes. For inverse design, the system formulates the problem as a Tikhonov-regularized least-squares optimization, where the Jacobian is efficiently computed via a single adjoint backward pass per mode. This allows designers to adjust bore geometry to shift selected resonance frequencies toward specified musical targets while satisfying hard spectral constraints.
