What it is

FEniCS lets you write weak forms almost as you would on paper (UFL), then automates code generation, assembly and solving. The official book "Automated Solution of Differential Equations by the Finite Element Method" (Logg et al.) is free online and doubles as a finite-element course.

Coverage

  • Poisson, elasticity, Stokes, Navier-Stokes, electromagnetics, mixed formulations
  • dolfinx (the modern DOLFIN successor) with C++/Python interfaces
  • Adjoint-based optimization via pyadjoint/dolfin-adjoint for inverse design

Learning path

  1. Install FEniCS/dolfinx; run the Poisson tutorial end to end
  2. Work through linear elasticity; understand function spaces and BCs
  3. Solve a mixed formulation (Stokes) - feel Taylor-Hood elements
  4. Use dolfin-adjoint to optimize a shape or parameter

Position in physics-ML

FEniCS is the reference for classical FEM on the site: PINN and neural operators are usually validated against it, and differentiable FEM complements PINN for inverse problems.
