Pangu-Weather — 3D Neural Global Medium-Range Weather ForecastingNew

Pangu-Weather (Bi et al., Nature 2023) is Huawei Cloud's 3D high-resolution global weather model. Using a 3D deep network trained on ERA5 reanalysis, it delivers faster and more accurate medium-range (up to 10-day) forecasts than the European ECMWF IFS baseline for the first time, and was adopted by ECMWF for operational testing.

It demonstrated that data-driven weather forecasting can surpass leading numerical weather prediction (NWP) systems, catalyzing the field. Important licensing note: the trained model weights are released under CC-BY-NC-SA-4.0, which forbids commercial use; training data derives from ECMWF's ERA5 under its Copernicus terms.
